Spring Concert - Saturday 16 March 2019, 7.30pm
St Stephen's Church, Lansdown Road, Bath
In March we welcomed back the choir's founder, Beresford King-Smith, so he could listen to his Psalm Symphony. In addition to this the choir performed Poulenc's witty Gloria and Finzi's deep Lo, the full final sacrifice. The orchestra also performed Fauré's beautiful Pavane. Julia O'Connor, soprano and baritone Richard Latham provided the soloists roles adding the icing on the top of what was a lovely concert.
Elgar The Kingdom - Saturday 8 June 2019, 7.30 pm
St John's RC Church, South Parade, Bath
BGG join forces with Oakfield Choir, Frome to perform Elgar's wonderful oratorio The Kingdom.
Soloists
Maria Danishvar soprano (Mary)
Arabella Heaton mezzo soprano (Mary Magdalene)
Joseph Doody tenor (John)
Craig Bissex baritone (Peter)
Full symphony orchestra conducted by Neil Moore
Following The Dream of Gerontius and The Apostles, the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival commissioned Elgar to produce another large oratorio for the 1906 festival. This was The Kingdom, which continues the narrative of the lives of Jesus's disciples. It depicts the community of the early church, Pentecost, and the events of the next few days.
Elgar had been planning a work depicting the Apostles as ordinary men, reacting to extraordinary events, for many years. His ideas outgrew the confines of a single work: parts of The Kingdom were written before The Apostles, and later Elgar considered them as the first two parts of a trilogy. The Kingdom is, in effect, its slow movement. In the event, the projected third part was never written.
