St Mary's Church, Bathwick

BCG continues to celebrate its Platinum Anniversary year in their next concert with a vibrant tapestry of choral masterworks celebrating praise, devotion, and musical brilliance, while marking two significant milestones: the 50th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s death and the 70th anniversary of Gerald Finzi’s.

The programme opens with Parry’s majestic I was glad, a resplendent anthem of welcome, before moving to Britten’s distinctive and imaginative writing in Rejoice in the Lamb and his luminous Te Deum and Jubilate in C. Finzi’s radiant Magnificat and the serene intimacy of Welcome, sweet and sacred feast offer contrasting moments of reflection and expressive warmth. The evening concludes with the brilliant counterpoint and spirited energy of Bach’s motet Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, bringing the concert to a jubilant close.

This landmark concert marks the culmination of a remarkable year for the choir, celebrating seven decades of music-making, friendship, community and artistic excellence. For this occasion Bath Cantata Group presents a vibrant and varied programme that reflects both its rich heritage and its continuing spirit of exploitation.

The performance will feature John Rutter's Birthday Magrigals, a delightful and witty collection that blends Renaissance inspiration with Rutter's unmistakable contemporary charm. You'll also enjoy Bob Chilcott's A Little Jazz Mass, a lively and rhythmically engaging work that fuses traditional liturgical text with jazz influences, offering a fresh and uplifting listening experience.

In addition, the programme will include a selection of beautifully arranged folk songs, celebrating storytelling, tradition and the warmth of communal singing.

Whether you are a long-time supporter or discovering Bath Cantata Group for the first time, this promises to be an inspiring and enjoyable evening of music in the welcoming setting of Freshford Memorial Hall.
